Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
Q: Will LTP5000D plasma cutter work with an automated drive system?
The LTP5000D Plasma cutter has a high-frequency arc start which is not the case with a CNC plasma cutter. This high-frequency arc might create interference with the CNC computer. We suggest not to use LTP5000D with an automated drive system.
Q: How to increase the consumable life of plasma cutter?
To get a longer life for consumables such as tips drier air must be supplied to the plasma cutter. Installing additional air drier/filter on the air hose will help to get drier air. This will also reduce operating costs and provide cleaner cuts.
Q: How LT5000D differ from LTP5000D?
LTP5000D plasma cutter is designed with pilot arc technology. The pilot arc torch does not need to touch the metal surface during cutting. Pilot arc torch is efficient to cut rugged, rusty, painted metal with nominal slag.
LT5000D does not have a pilot arc torch so the torch needs to touch the metal surface during cutting.
LTP5000D consumes lesser consumables due to non-touch technology.
Q: What is the purpose of post flow in LT5000D?
Following the release of the plasma, trigger air continues to flow for a few seconds. Once cutting stops this post flow of air helps cool down consumable parts.
Q: How frequent should the air filter be cleaned?
This piece is called an air-water separator and regulator. It traps the moisture from the air. The water accumulated inside needs to drain out periodically. To drain the water out, one has to pull the center tube located at the bottom. Adding an oil removal filter in the airline will help get clean, dry, oil-free air.
Q: Why the OC light of plasma cutter remains on?
OC light will get on if excessive moisture comes through the airline. Drain the air compressor tank, put extra air filters in the airline between the compressor and cutter also use the moisture separator that comes with the machine.
Q: Is it right to weld galvanized metal?
Arc welder will do it. However, welding (plasma cutting) galvanized metal produces toxic smoke inhalation, which could be harmful to health. So, before going ahead, wipe away the galvanization and ensure excellent ventilation in the welded area to stay safe from harmful fumes.
Q: How does smart cooling fan work in plasma cutter?
The smart cooling fans do not start immediately after the plasma cutter turns on or at the start of the cutting process. Rather it will start after the internal heat rises to a certain level. Thereby it helps save energy.
Q: Why some welders will not weld aluminum while others do?
The reason is the aluminum oxide layer. The melting temperature of aluminum is 660C, while aluminum oxide melts at above 2000C. DC output TIG easily melts aluminum but doesn't generate enough heat to melt the oxide. Whereas AC output steadily breaks the oxide layer through thermal cycling. Steels oxidize slowly compared to aluminum, also steel oxides are not too messy. Thus it is easy to weld steel oxides using DC output.
Buying Guide-Plasma Cutter
The construction of a plasma cutter involves lots of electrical, mechanical, and other technical issues. Plasma cutters also vary in capabilities and relevance. So, when buying a plasma cutter, one needs to properly examine some technicalities to ensure the selection of suitable configurations for the intended use. Here we explain some of the features that we believe are important to consider before buying a plasma cutter.
Input Voltage
Plasma cutters may have requirements of 110~120V AC or 220~240V AC input voltage. Some may operate on both. The overall power of a plasma cutter depends on input voltage and amperage, which also impacts cutting thickness and cutting speed.
Output Power
Output amperage is a factor that directly affects the cutting ability of a plasma cutter. Most plasma cutters offer a 20-50Amp current range, which is sufficient to accomplish most tasks. Higher amperage will provide a longer duty cycle, while lower amperage will give a shorter duty cycle.
Duty Cycle
The duty cycle is a significant factor to consider when buying a plasma cutter. A plasma cutter having a 40% duty cycle can be used for 4 minutes every 10 minutes without causing harm to internal parts or the machine itself.
The duty cycle depends on cutting at the highest current and internal components temperature reaching the maximum value. Most plasma cutters have sensors that automatically stop the cutter when it meets certain threshold conditions.
If a plasma cutter operates at a higher ambient temperature, internal components will rapidly approach the duty cycle standards. However, working at lower ambient temperature internal components will take longer to rise to duty cycle standards.
In general, for manual cutting projects, a 50% duty cycle will be good enough. For mechanized long-time cutting, a 50% duty cycle might be insufficient. An efficient cooling system will help achieve an extended duty cycle.
Cutting Thickness
Plasma cutters with 40 Amp output amperage may precisely cut roughly ½" thickness. Some cutters may cut up to ¾" thickness.
- To cut ¼" thick metal 25 Amp cutter is preferable.
- To cut up to ½" thick metal 40 Amp cutter is excellent
- To cut up to 1" thick metal minimum 80 Amp cutter will need.
Please do not mix up severance thickness with cut thickness. In most cases, severance cut produces too much slag and distorted edges, which are much different from a fine, absolute cut.
Pilot arc Technology
A pilot arc feature can generate a very stable and continuous plasma stream. Pilot arc allows a smooth cut of painted and rusted metals having holes or breaks. MOSFET transistors enable a steady arc helping to achieve a clean cut with minimal slag. A pilot arc creates lesser electrical interferences with nearby electronics. It also gives consumables longer life, thus reducing running costs.
Starting Process
- Contact start requires the torch tip to touch the metal surface to perform a cut. It affects consumables life. It does not create interference.
- Pilot arc allows cut without the torch tip contacting the cutting surface.
- High frequency may create plenty of interference with electronic devices like computer, laptop, television, mobile, telephone so on.
Built-in Inverter
Built-in inverter plasma cutters are a great help for those who work mobile service or at remote locations. Built-in inverters can also run on DC power.
Concluding Remarks
There are plenty of plasma cutter options available in the market. In this piece, we have presented the best plasma cutter reviews according to our observations. So have done some study before arriving at a decision. Hopefully, you will find your desired plasma cutter from our reviewed items. Enjoy cutting!
